The Architectural Shift: Moving Beyond the Ceiling

For decades, greenhouse lighting followed a singular, "celestial" model: light comes from above, mimicking the sun. But as cultivation transitioned into high-density commercial environments, we hit the Canopy Ceiling. Whether you are growing 4-meter-tall indeterminate tomatoes or 1.5-meter-tall medicinal cannabis, top-down lighting eventually fails to reach the biological "engine" of the plant.

This has led to the rise of two distinct subsurface lighting strategies: Inter-canopy Lighting and Under-canopy Lighting. While many use these terms interchangeably, from an engineering and horticultural standpoint, they are as different as a floor lamp is from a chandelier. To maximize efficiency, growers must stop wasting photons on top leaves and deliver light to the middle canopy.

At JTGL (JT grow light), we design solutions for both. But to choose the right one, you must understand the physics of the row and the biology of the leaf.

Part 1: Inter-canopy Lighting (ICL) – The High-Wire Specialist

What is Inter-canopy Lighting?

Inter-canopy lighting refers to the placement of LED fixtures vertically or horizontally within a plant's foliage layers of the plant. This is the gold standard for high-wire crops (Vine Crops) such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.

02

Middle-Layer Activation

In a high-wire system, the plant's production capacity is vertically distributed. The upper leaves are often light-saturated, while the middle leaves-those closest to the ripening fruit clusters-are in a "light shadow."  This shadow effect is the primary cause of the 60% light loss in high-wire canopies, which limits your total yield.

By installing Intercanopy Supplemental Lighting at the 1.5 to 2-meter mark, we solve the Light Extinction Coefficient problem. We are effectively "feeding" the leaves that are responsible for pumping sugars (BRIX) into the developing fruit. This targeted lighting is the key to increasing BRIX and Vitamin C levels in your greenhouse tomatoes.

The "Sweat Box" Challenge

Because ICL fixtures are buried deep within the transpiration zone of a dense canopy, they face extreme humidity.

Thermal Management: Intra-canopy lighting bars must be passively cooled. Fans would clog with biological debris, disrupting the delicate VPD (Vapor Pressure Deficit) of the canopy.

Beam Angle: Intra-canopy lighting requires a wider distribution, often 120° to 180°, to ensure light hits the leaves horizontally rather than wasting energy on the floor or ceiling.

Part 2: Under-canopy Lighting (UCL) – The Bushy Crop Revolution

What is Under-canopy Lighting?

Under-canopy lighting involves placing light fixtures on the floor or just above the substrate, pointing upwards into the bottom of the plant. This is rapidly becoming the preferred method for "bushy" crops, most notably medicinal cannabis.

02

Abaxial Stomata Activation

While inter-canopy lighting targets the middle foliage, Under-canopy grow lights target the Abaxial (underside) of the lower leaves. The underside of a leaf contains the highest density of stomata-the "mouths" of the plant that exchange CO2.

By "lighting from below," Under canpy grow lights triggers a unique hormonal response. In cannabis, this has been shown to:

  • Eliminate "Larf": It turns small, airy bottom buds into dense, sellable "A-Grade" flower.
  • Increase Terpene Production: Upward-directed light stimulates trichome development in areas previously discarded during pruning (lollipopping).

Low Profile & Mechanical Durability

Unlike the hanging bars of intercanopy lighting, undercanopy lighting fixtures sit in the "splash zone."

  • Impact Resistance: They must be robust enough to withstand being bumped by workers or picking carts.
  • Slim Design: Every centimeter of height used by the light is a centimeter of growth space lost. UCL fixtures must be ultra-low profile.

Part 3: Head-to-Head Comparison: Intercanopy lighting vs. Undercanopy lighting

To help you decide which system fits your facility, we have broken down the primary differences:

Feature Inter-canopy Lighting (ICL) Under-canopy Lighting (UCL)
Primary Crops Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Peppers Cannabis, Bushy Herbs, Ornamentals
Mounting Position Suspended within the foliage Floor-mounted or substrate-level
Light Direction Horizontal (120° - 180°) Upward (90° - 120°)
Main Benefit Increases BRIX and total fruit weight Increases flower density and secondary metabolites
VPD Impact Moderate (Increases mid-canopy transpiration) High (Warms the root zone and lower air)
Maintenance Requires vertical adjustment as plant grows Fixed position; requires cleaning of lens from runoff

Part 4: The Shared Threat – The Humidity Trap

Regardless of whether you choose ICL or UCL, the environmental challenges remain the same. The interior of a canopy is a high-humidity micro-climate. At JTGL, we engineering all our sub-surface lighting with a Dual-Protection Philosophy:

  • IP66/IP67 Certification: We don't just use glue; we use hermetic vacuum-sealing and Hydrophobic Nano-coatings. This ensures that "plant sweat" and fertigation runoff never penetrate the circuitry.
  • Aerodynamic Form Factors: Our bars and floor strips are designed to minimize airflow obstruction. In the "Death Zone" of a greenhouse, stagnant air leads to Powdery Mildew. Our slim-profile designs ensure that your Airflow Optimization strategy remains intact.

To avoid short circuits and mold, your intercanopy lights must be more than just waterproof; they need professional engineering.

Part 5: Which One Increases Your ROI?

canopy lightings

As a manufacturer, I tell my clients: Don't buy light; buy yield.

Choose Inter-canopy Lighting if: You are a high-wire vegetable grower whose main KPI is "Kilograms per Square Meter." If your bottom clusters are ripening slowly or your lower leaves are yellowing, ICL is your solution. It addresses the Vertical PPFD Distribution crisis and pays for itself through higher BRIX and heavier fruit.

Choose Under-canopy Lighting if: You are a cannabis or high-value herb grower whose main KPI is "Chemical Potency and Grade-A Percentage." If you are spending too much labor on "lollipopping" or throwing away too much "larf," UCL will transform your harvest quality.

The JTGL Advantage: Integration Excellence

At JTGL (JT Grow Light), we don't believe in "one size fits all." We understand that a tomato greenhouse in the UK has different needs than a cannabis facility in California.

We offer Custom Light Recipes (Recipe on Demand). For ICL, we might recommend a 660nm-heavy spectrum to drive sugar transport. For UCL, we might suggest a higher blue-to-red ratio to maintain compact growth and prevent stretching in the lower canopy.

Lighting the Future from the Inside Out

The era of relying solely on top-lighting is over. To compete in the modern agricultural market, you must maximize every photon. Whether you choose horizontal penetration with Inter-canopy lighting or upward activation with Under-canopy lighting, you are making a strategic move toward a more efficient, high-yield future.

The "physics of the row" dictates that light must be delivered where the plant is most active. Don't leave your middle and lower canopy in the dark. Let the engineering team at JTGL help you design a supplemental lighting system that turns your "Light Shadows" into "Profit Centers."
